Late Model jockey Giossi tops Red Cedar opener field on Friday night, along with Iverson, Chernosky, Borgeson and Hanson
MENOMONIE, WI (May 9) - After weather hampered Red Cedar Speedway’s efforts in April, the track welcomed drivers and fans back for its 2025 season Friday, May 9, the 52nd opener in the track’s storied history.
Opening night WISSOTA-sanctioned winners included Andrew Hanson, James Giossi, Cody Borgeson, Calvin Iverson, and Cole Chernosky.
Cole Richards was the leader to complete lap one of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, with Ryan Howe, sixth-starter Travis Loew and eighth-starter Andrew Hanson three wide for second. Loew moved into the spot, with Hanson slipping into third and Howe settling into fourth. Dylan Baskin was fifth.
Hanson worked to the inside and moved by Loew about a lap later, and quickly began to chip away at Richards’ lead, grabbing the top spot to complete the next lap.
Hanson began to work through lapped traffic with seven laps left on the board, but a yellow for a Dylan Baskin spin brought the field back together one lap later.
After another caution following the ensuing restart, the battle was on between Hanson and Richards. With Hanson to the low side and Richards to his outside, they were side by side for another lap or so until Hanson was able to pull away with a healthy advantage heading to the white flag. Hanson took the win ahead of Richards, Howe, Bill Stettner and Jenna Herrman in the top five.
Cole Chernosky (Chris Burback Photo)
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were led to the green by Jesse Redetzke and Cole Chernosky. Redetzke had the early advantage, but Chernosky had the momentum to get by on lap two. Terran Spacek held third, Kolby Kiehl was fourth and Alex Myers was fifth. A caution fell with just a couple laps completed for Dylan Leu, who was spun in turn four.
Chernosky led the field back to green, with Spacek getting to second, Myers and Kiehl in a side-by-side battle for third, and Dan Nissalke in fifth. Another spin and another caution brought the field back together.
Myers moved into second behind race leader Chernosky after the restart, with Spacek third, Kiehl fourth and Nissalke fifth, as Redetzke fell back through the field along the high side. Another caution for a Robert Holmstrom spin in turn four brought the field back together with three laps to go. Another caution for an Adam Pratt spin on the restart kept the field slowed.
Chernosky continued to lead back under green, with Spacek getting a much better restart and retaking second from Myers. Kiehl was close behind in fourth, with Nissalke fifth.
Stretching his advantage in the final laps, Chernosky took the win ahead of Spacek, Myers, Kiehl and Nissalke in the top five.
Cody Borgeson (Chris Burback Photo)
Cody Borgeson used the high side to his advantage to start the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. He moved from fourth to first to complete lap one, but continued to be challenged by Jesse Bryan for the top spot. Behind them, Jake Stai and Shadow Kitchner fought for third. Joseph Swearingen was fifth.
One lap later Borgeson began to build his advantage, as Bryan held second ahead of Kitchner, and Swearingen moved by Stai to fourth.
Borgeson had built a 2-second advantage before a caution fell for Derek Haas, who had slowed along the frontstretch.
Back under green, Borgeson continued to lead, under pressure now from Kitchner for the top spot. Bryan was third, Swearingen was fourth and Stai held fifth.
No one had anything for Borgeson in the closing laps, as he took the victory by more than 2 seconds ahead of Kitchner. Bryan, Swearingen, and Stai were top five finishers.
Calvin Iverson (Chris Burback Photo)
Calvin Iverson was the early leader in the WISSOTA Modified feature from the pole, but a first lap caution for a tangle between Travis Hallquist and Justin Weinberger reracked the field for a full restart.
As the field got back underway, Iverson was the leader ahead of a side-by-side battle between Chernosky and Smith for second; Chernosky took the spot. Smith settled into third, with Cory Crapser fourth and Kennedy Swan in fifth.
Iverson began to work his way through lapped traffic, with Chernosky in second, Smith third, Crapser fourth and Swan fifth. There was nothing stopping Iverson, as he drove home with the eventual victory. Chernosky, Smith, Crapser, and Swan were top-five finishers.
James Giossi (Chris Burback Photo)
James Giossi shot off to a big lead early on in the WISSOTA Late Model feature, as Chad Mahder settled into second, Buddy Hanestad was third, Jesse Glenz was fourth and Cory Crapser was fifth.
With a handful of laps in the books, Mahder began to chip away at Giossi’s lead. Giossi was able to pull back away when Mahder got too high in turns one and two, and again in turns three and four. Farther back, Crapser and Glenz were fighting side by side for fourth, with Crapser taking the spot from Glenz.
Out front, Giossi began to work through the back of the field, allowing Mahder to close within a second of Giossi. Giossi got by the lapped car, leaving Mahder to do the same. As Mahder slid the lapped car in turns three and four, he looped his ride and the caution fell.
Giossi held the lead following the restart, as Crapser and Hanestad were side by side for second. Crapser pulled away, and Glenz followed his tracks through to third, with Anderson doing the same into fourth. Hanestad settled back into fifth.
With Giossi out front and Crapser close behind in second, Anderson began to work Glenz for third. During the final lap, with Giossi to the low side coming out of turn two, Crapser had a run on the top and caught Giossi down the backstretch; Crapser dove to the inside of Giossi in turn three, and tried to slide up the track for position, but Giossi held on for the victory, his third overall of the 2025 season. Crapser, Glenz, Anderson and Hanestad were top-five finishers.
In the track’s Hornet class, Brandon Gleitner was victorious.
