I-94 closes out the season with Scott Enger Memorial; Gopher State winners are Adams, Nelson, Sabraski, Smith, Tourville and Cast

By Ron Krog

FERGUS FALLS, MN (Oct 17) – Despite the weather, a strong turnout of 209 cars and a great Saturday night crowd enjoyed a highly entertaining event to close out the Gopher State Showdown and Scott Engfer Memorial.

Nine classes took to the track, and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action was highlighted by wins from Keith Tourville, Jake Smith, Shane Sabraski, Blake Adams, Dylan Nelson, and Christian Kast.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were led to green by Keith Tourville and Levi Randt on the front row. Tourville was the early leader, as Eric Riley moved into third and chased after Randt. Jodie Michaelsohn was fourth, followed by Greg Jose in fifth.

Tourville drove on to garner the eventual victory, while Randt locked down the WISSOTA Street Stock National Championship with his second-place finish. Riley, Jose and Michaelsohn completed the top five.

Brayden Fleck was the hard charger, as the young star fought from 21st to ninth.

The WISSOTA Midwest Mods did not mess around, as they ran their 20-lap feature in 7 minutes and 5 seconds. Jake Smith was smooth and fast as he passed Jake Molitor for the lead and never looked back. Reise Stenberg was very strong in second, and the fast Nate Reinke grabbed third. Dylan McCaughan was fourth, and Jory Berg was fifth.

Travis Saurer jumped into Nick Preston’s No. 28K car and was the hard charger as he rolled from 15th to finish seventh.

A nice field of 19 WISSOTA Super Stocks chased the very fast Dylan Nelson, who started from the front row. Shane Sabraski moved into second with a handful of laps completed from his sixth starting spot as Jordan Henkemeyer, Tim Johnson and Ryan Satter all went at it for third.

When the checkered flew, Dylan Nelson grabbed win, while Dexton Koch charged from seventh to finish second ahead of Sabraski. Sabraski, Johnson and Satter were all close behind in the remaining top five.

The WISSOTA Modified feature had national point implications, as Blake Adams had a 1-point lead ahead of Jody Bellefeuille heading into the weekend’s action. Adams was set to start on the pole and Bellefeuille started fourth. Adams and Seth Brede fought hard for the lead early on, and Adams took charge. Froemming drove by Bellefeuille to third and set off after Brede, as they warred over second.

Following a restart with three laps in the books, Froemming got by Brede to second but Brede fought back and regained the spot. Bellefeuille was fourth and Travis Saurer was fifth.

With 10 laps in the books, Adams had a near 2.5-second lead, before the caution fell once again.

Back under green, Froemming and Brede continued their fight for second briefly before Brede spun along the top side in a near-disaster for Bellefeuille. The caution came back out over the field.

Adams remained in control through the remainder of the race and several cautions, taking the victory and the national title. Froemming, Bellefeuille, Sabraski and Saurer in the top five.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature was a wild one, marred by several cautions early on. Shane Sabraski drove by Tyler Peterson early in the 40-lapper, and Peterson fell back to fourth as Sam Mars and Dave Mass drove past into podium spots.

Following a caution, the top was the place to be for Peterson, who worked his way back past Mars — who had given up second to Mass — around lap 16. Out front, Sabraski held the advantage, with Mass closing quickly in lapped traffic. The caution fell with 15 laps to go when Mass struck an infield tire and it rolled onto the track. Following the restart, Peterson shot by Mass into a fight for the lead with Sabraski, but then settled into second. Mars was fourth and eleventh-starter Jason Strand was fifth.

Following another restart late in the race, Mass left the track, presumably due to the earlier tire incident, and Strand drove past Mars to third. That’s how they finished, with Sabraski garnering the feature win ahead of Peterson, Strand and Mars in the top four. The fastest car in the field might have been Shane Edginton, who advanced 22 spots to finish fifth and grab the hard charger award.

A nice field of 19 WISSOTA Hornets wrapped up the evening, with Christian Kast and William Lange putting on a great show. The two went back and forth for the lead, and Kast grabbed the eventual checkered by one foot at the line ahead of Lange. Thirteenth-starter Cameryn Taylor was third, Dalten Pedersen was fourth, and Adam Throener charged ahead 10 spots to finished fifth.

The Gen X Late Models were also in action and Don Shaw picked up a dominating win. A great field of 24 Legends were also on hand, and Gage Madler edged his brother Noah for the win. In the IMCA Northern Sport Mods, Jayden Pavlicek drove by Jake Smith for the victory.
