Sabraski scores a second Dirt Track Nationals win while Chernosky, Simpson, Randt and Fosso tally night two victories

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (September 26) - Shane Sabraski topped the Dirt Track Nationals at Thunder City Speedway Saturday in the WISSOTA Modified headliner, gaining an important point night in the chase to the WISSOTA National Championship.

Other winners celebrating their WISSOTA Dirt Track Series victories in the winner’s circle Saturday included David Simpson in the Midwest Modifieds, Cole Chernosky in the Super Stocks, Levi Randt in the Street Stocks, and Brady Fosso in the Hornets.

Kathryn Stieh was the early leader in the WISSOTA Street Stock headliner, as Levi Randt and A.J. Keller fought back and forth for runner-up honors. Stieh began to catch lapped traffic just a handful of laps into the feature, and this allowed Randt to close back in on her bumper at times, with Kellar also close behind.

Stieh lost the lead in part thanks to a lapped car, and Randt drove by for the top spot. Stieh was under heavy pressure from Keller, who drove by her along the bottom as they split a lapped car down the backstretch. Kellar set off after Randt, who was just a car length ahead in the turns. A caution regrouped the field with 10 to go.

Randt led the field back to green, but a caution for a car up along the wall kept the field slowed. Yet another caution on the following restart continued to mar the complexion of the feature.

Randt took off with the healthy back under green, as Stieh fought her way back into second ahead of Kyle Bolt, Kellar and Sam Williamson in fifth.

With five to go Randt’s lead had built considerably. He held on for the dominant feature victory through the waning laps and another caution to take the win. Stieh, Bolt, Kellar and Nathan Henny completed the top five.

Once underway, Brady Fosso used his pole starting spot to dominate the WISSOTA Hornet feature. Early in the going, Fosso had a several-car-length lead ahead of Selena Owen, who was under heavy pressure from Martin Bolt. With two laps complete Martin Bolt moved into the runner-up spot, as Owen was under pressure from twin Jimmy Owen for third. It was three wide for fifth among James Cuthbertson, Sam Bolt and Jesse Owen. Cuthbertson took the spot one lap later.

Out front Fosso had an advantage of .713 seconds ahead of Martin Bolt. Jesse Owen and Selena Owen remained side by side for third before a caution halted action with eight laps remaining.

Fosso continued to lead throughout the remainder of the feature, with Bolt finishing second. Jimmy Owen was third ahead of Selena after the tech shed, and Jesse Owen was fifth.

Matthew Mitchell and Glen Brown brought the field of WISSOTA Midwest Mods to the green flag for their feature event. Mitchell was the initial leader ahead of a side-by-side fight for second between Brown and David Simpson. Simpson and Brown were right on Mitchell’s heels, with Brown using the high side with three laps complete to hold the slight advantage. Simpson closed in on Mitchell, as Shane Sabraski was fourth and Tyler Vernon was in the top five. With five laps complete, Simpson used the high side along the backstretch to move by Mitchell, while Vernon drove by Sabraski for fourth and then got by Mitchell for third. Out front Simpson grabbed the lead from Brown, who fell back another spot to Vernon the next time by. Mitchell was fourth and Sabraski had slipped back to fifth.

As the frontrunners began to work through lapped traffic, a caution regrouped the field and restored order on the track.

Simpson held the lead ahead of Vernon when the field returned to green, while Sabraski drove to the inside into third past Brown. Sabraski quickly pulled to the bumper of Vernon, before Vernon was able to pull away slightly again at the halfway point of the feature.

With 11 laps to go, Simpson had to navigate a lapped car but kept his lead. The same lapped car proved disastrous for Vernon, however, as Sabraski used the opportunity to slide past Vernon into second.

In the closing laps, lapped traffic was thick and Sabraski was able to close the gap to Simpson, just .2 seconds behind the leader. Simpson pulled away in the last few laps and took the victory ahead of Sabraski, Vernon, Curtis Stieh and Garrett Paull in the top five.

Cole Chernosky and Tyler Kostecki led the WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag. Chernosky shot out to the early lead, as Shawn Polonoski shook out into second ahead of a cluster of racers for top-five spots including Tyler Kostecki, Tim Johnson, Rick Simpson and Dylan Nelson.

Following a caution, Chernosky pulled away back under green, with Polonoski trying to hold off the charge of Simpson and Johnson. With four laps complete, Simpson and Johnson split Polonoski, and Simpson took second while Johnson was third. Dylan Nelson cracked the top five and then worked past Polonoski into fourth.

Out front, Chernosky worked his way through the backmarkers and Simpson held second. Johnson was third ahead of Sabraski, with Nelson fifth.

About a lap later Sabraski moved in quickly and grabbed third from Johnson, just behind Simpson in second with 14 laps to go.

With nine laps left on the board, Sabraski had moved in to pressure Simpson for second; trying both the high and low side, while also navigating lapped traffic; Sabraski made the pass with just three to go. A caution one lap later regrouped the field and brought Sabraski and Simpson right back to Chernosky’s bumper.

Chernosky held on through the last couple of laps to garner the victory, while Sabraski finished second. Simpson prevailed over Nelson, and Johnson was fifth.

Chernosky and Sabraski were back on track to bring the WISSOTA Modifieds to the green flag to close out action Saturday in Thunder Bay. Chernosky was the early leader, before Sabraski used a slider to score the lead officially at the line. Nick Oreskovich was third, Dave Cain was fourth and Ricky Weiss was fifth in the early going.

Chernosky remained in the hunt for the lead, as Oreskovich felt the heat from Cain for third. Jody Bellefeuille worked past Weiss to fifth.

Sabraski continued to work his way through backmarkers with 12 laps complete. Chernosky remained about 1.7 seconds back in second, with Oreskovich third, Bellefeuille fourth and Cain in fifth.

With Sabraski a little less than 2 seconds out in front ahead of Chernosky, things got chippy for third between Oreskovich and Bellefeuille. Bellefeuille took the spot, as Weiss had regained fifth from Cain.

Fourteen laps remained on the board as Sabraski had a parking lot of lapped traffic ahead of him. Sabraski cut through the traffic with ease, and added to his lead. Bellefeuille remained third, now about 2 seconds ahead of Oreskovich. Weiss was fifth.

As Sabraski worked through corner three with seven laps to go, a lapped car hit the marker tire, causing Cody Wolkowski to go around just inches ahead of Sabraski, who darted to the outside and avoided the crash.

Back under green, Sabraski slipped away once again, as Chernosky held a slight advantage ahead of Bellefeuille in second. Weiss was fourth, while Kaden Blaeser took fifth from Oreskovich.

Sabraski led the closing laps and took the win, with Chernosky settling for second. Bellefeuille was third, Weiss was fourth and Blaeser finished fifth.

In the track’s other action, Hudsen Sorensen won the Junior Slingshots feature.
