Stieh, Sabraski and Vernon kick off Thunder City’s Dirt Track Nationals with night one feature wins

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (September 19) - A large field of racers from Canada and the United States converged upon the Thunder Bay area Friday night, as Thunder City Speedway hosted the first of two nights of action as part of its annual Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals.

On tap for the evening’s program were features in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Mods, as well as heat races and B features for the Street Stocks. Winners in sanctioned action included Curtis Stieh, Shane Sabraski, and Tyler Vernon.

Stieh started seventh on the grid in the WISSOTA Modified feature. He made his way into the top five early on and then slowly worked his way into a podium spot by lap 14. He moved into the lead about two laps later and from there, built a more than 3-second lead ahead of Cole Chernosky in second. Mike Anderson completed the podium, while Sabraski charged from 17th on the starting grid to finish fourth, ahead of Joel Cryderman - who had led the early stages of the race - in the top five.

Sabraski, who was in search of his 1,000th career win this weekend, knocked down win No. 999 in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. He started from the pole and led from start to finish, growing his advantage to more than 4 seconds at the checkered flag ahead of ninth-starter and perennial opponent Dexton Koch. Matt Deragon improved seven spots to third, while Tim Johnson was fourth. Dylan Nelson completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, national championship contender Tyler Vernon scored another important points night Friday, sweeping action in the open-wheel class. It wasn’t easy however, as the Wisconsin native had to start in the fifth row. He made his way into the top five by lap two however, and from there continued to make moves, taking the lead by lap six. He remained out front for the next 19 laps, trailed by early race leader Ashley Boyum. Vernon took the checkered flag ahead of Boyum, William Moelter, 11th-starter Garrett Paull and ninth-starter Stieh.
