Mass scores Challenge Series win as Late Models open 40th annual WISSOTA 100

FERGUS FALLS, MN (September 15) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series began its final two-day run toward the championship on Tuesday, September 15 at I-94 emr Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN, as a part of the opening night of the 40th Speedway Motors WISSOTA 100.

Dave Mass, the reigning Challenge Series Champion, took his place in victory lane when the final checkered flew Tuesday and the points race tightened up for current point leader Kevin Burdick and Shane Sabraski.

Forty WISSOTA Late Model competitors were on hand and Sam Mars set fast time with a lap of 16.447 seconds around the 3/8 mile oval.

Following heat race action, Mass and Cole Searing earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event. Mass was the early leader from the pole with Searing and Overton side by side for runner-up honors just ahead of Tyler Peterson in fourth as the field rumbled down the frontstretch to conclude the opening lap.

Mass ran out front, but Searing and Overton made it nearly three-wide on several occasions for the lead during the first five laps of the event. They rolled to the inside and outside of Mass on several occasions, thrilling fans as the lead trio ran three-wide out front for multiple laps. They swapped the lead over and over until the only caution of the event flew on lap five for Burdick, who got into the backstretch wall, slowing the action. He was able to make it off the track to the hot pit and back on track just as the field was scheduled to go back to green.

Following the restart, Searing and Overton ran side by side for the top spot with Mass a close third, again nearly running three wide with margins of less than a .10 of a second on multiple occasions. Mars and Tollakson continued their battle for a top five run as well.

As the lead three continued to wage an all-out war for the top spot, fourth-running Peterson slowly moved back into the mix and made it a four-car battle for the lead, while lapped traffic became a factor during the final five circuits as well.

Mass was finally able to overtake Searing for the lead on lap 36 for good and drive off to his ninth feature win of the season by a margin of 0.623 seconds. Overton rounded out the podium, just ahead of Peterson and Tollakson, who completed the top five.

Mars, Johnny Broking, Shane Sabraski, Thomas Weisgram and Ryan Mikkelson were top-10 finishers in the 40-lapper.
