Adams doubles up on first night of Dairyland Dash while Spacek, Anderson and Smith also storm to Rice Lake wins
By Ed Reichert
RICE LAKE, WI (August 30) - Blake Adams was a perfect two for two Saturday, winning the WISSOTA Modified and Midwest Modified features, as the second annual Dairyland Dash got underway August 30 at Rice Lake Speedway.
With 154 drivers from three states signed in to race, other winners in WISSOTA-sanctioned action on a busy Saturday night of racing included Parker Anderson, Terran Spacek and Jake Smith.
Adams started on the outside pole for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature by virtue of passing points earned during heat race action. He flanked Brady Larson for the start, but had the early jump to lead the opening laps. Will Moelter made a strong early statement as he drove past both Joey Jensen and Larson to take over second behind Adams.
By the halfway point of the race, Adams opened up his lead by just a few car lengths while Moelter, Larson and Jensen continued a torrid battle for second with thick traffic ahead.
The top four were challenged by the heavy traffic with all of them forced to make some real adjustments in their lines as they searched for openings. As Adams continued his slight lead, Larson made a great move and drove past Jensen and Moelter into second, with Jensen following through to third.
Adams secured his win when he got past three more lapped cars, driving home from there for the win. Larson, Jensen and Moelter followed in the top four. Ashley Boyum and Jake Stai spent the entire race battling for fifth, with Boyum completing the top five.
Adams earned the pole position after a great heat race win to begin the WISSOTA Modified feature. He took the lead from Matt Leer at the drop of the green, while Justin Weinberger was on the move early, coming from the third row to challenge Kaden Blaeser for second. Blaeser then picked up the pace to fight off challenges and maintain that position.
Adams adjusted his line around the track as Blaeser started to slowly cut into his lead, while those two pulled away from the field. Leer was riding the high side all the way around the track as he battled with Weinberger and Brady Uotinen for position.
Blaeser moved in to provide a stiff challenge for the lead as the race reached its end. With just five laps to go, Blaeser was able to slip inside Adams coming off turn four and briefly take over the lead. However, Adams fought back and as the leaders raced through traffic, Adams was able to find an opening quicker and drive back into the lead.
Blaeser wasn't done though as on the final lap he dove inside Adams once again as they moved through turn four and it was a race back to the line with Adams holding on by .072 seconds, or a bumper length, to get the win. Leer finished off a strong run as he held off Weinberger for third with Uotinen holding off Don Eischens for fifth.
Terran Spacek (Brent Creaser Photo)
Shane Kisling led the first two laps of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. He was quickly challenged by Joey Jensen and Curt Myers for the top spot.
Myers, who started fifth, used the outside line to gain speed and he drove past Kisling on lap three to take over the lead. Myers then led a number of laps with Jensen providing the stiffest challenge to his lead. Mike Loomis moved into third and 11th-starter Terran Spacek showed in the top five at the halfway point of the race.
Spacek was far from done though, as he continued to charge to the front, moving into third and pushing both Jensen and Myers for the lead. Following a lap-10 yellow, Jensen made a severe challenge to Myers’ lead and as those two were fighting it out, an opening suddenly developed on the low side of the track. Spacek dove for it and as the waters parted, he found himself in the lead. Myers fought back, and they were joined by 14th-starter Eric Olson, who had used the low line to move steadily to the front.
Two late yellows kept the field bunched and while Myers tried his hardest to get the lead back, Spacek was just too quick as he held on for the win. Olson drove under Myers right at the end to get second with Myers settling for third. A post race incident at the scales disqualified the fourth and fifth-place drivers, with Tommy Richards officially fourth and 18th-starter Shawn McFadden finishing out the top five.
Parker Anderson (Brent Creaser Photo)
Parker Anderson earned a hard-fought WISSOTA Street Stock victory in a race where the top three finishers crossed the line in a group. Hunter VanGilder led the opening lap before Anderson got past him to take over the lead. VanGilder and Danny Richards went at it for second, with VanGilder spinning on lap eight after contact. Those two chose to discuss the incident under yellow with both asked by track officials to exit the speedway.
Shawn Amundson and Nick Traynor became Anderson’s stiffest challengers. The race was stopped several times for spins and debris on the track, but on each restart, Amundson was right to the inside of Anderson's car, looking for an opening. Meanwhile, Traynor was trying to use the high groove to get around both the other drivers.
Coming around the final turn, Anderson held them off with his winning margin a scant .237 of a second ahead of Amundson. Traynor was just to the outside of Amundson as he crossed the line in third. Jimmy Randall made a rare appearance and finished fourth, with 19th-starter Sam Fankhauser completing the top five.
Jake Smith (Brent Creaser Photo)
Jake Smith and C.J. Wagner shared the front row for the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature, but Austin Fencl found an opening on the first lap and that allowed him to drive into the lead.
Fencl was in charge for the first half of the race with Bob Wahlstrom moving into second. As the race reached its halfway point, Wahlstrom began to close in on Fencl.
Wahlstrom tried several times to get under the leader but then, exiting turn four, there was contact between the two just as another driver spun to trigger the yellow. The contact was enough that Fencl had to pit to replace a flat tire while Wahlstrom was sent to the tail of the field for his actions. Jake Smith inherited the lead for the restart, with Mark Barta in second and charging for the lead.
Unfortunately, Barta pushed too hard in turn four on lap 13 and spun the leader. He was sent to the back for the incident and Smith got his spot back. During the last couple of laps Wagner then rode the tail of Smith, but Smith gave him no openings as he drove on for his first-ever win at Rice Lake, becoming the ninth different Pure Stock winner in the track's most balanced division. Rob Grabon came from sixth to complete the top three, while 10th-starter Dylan Helget and 11th-starter Steve Karshbaum rounded out the top five.
Twenty-five drivers started the USRA Late Model feature, but Cade Nelson had this race under his control. He started on the pole and led every lap to get his second win of the season at Rice Lake.
