Corcoran captures WISSOTA Late Model victory as River Cities plays host to WoO Sprints on Friday

GRAND FORKS, ND (August 28) - The WISSOTA Late Models joined the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Friday at River Cities Speedway and Tom Corcoran, a 57-year veteran of racing in this area, won the main event. Corcoran’s victory was his second in the 2020s, and he has won features at the speedway in all six decades he’s competed.

Corcoran and Kelsi Pederson made up the front row of the WISSOTA Late Model main event. Pederson, who started on the outside of the row, came into the night as the most recent Late Model winner, picking up her first victory at the speedway two weeks prior.

Corcoran led the 21-car field into turns one and two with Pederson and Brad Seng rounding out the top three at the end of the lap. Corcoran led the first three laps before the only caution flag of the race briefly slowed the pace.

Corcoran resumed the race as the leader with Pederson still in second. Dustin Strand moved to the inside of Seng to move into third, with Shane Edginton following him into fourth. Strand continued his move through the field on the following lap, moving past Pederson in the first turn on lap six to become the new runner-up, with Edginton following Strand into third to complete the new podium.

Corcoran had a half straightaway lead on lap 10 as Edginton went door-to-door to the inside of Strand in a bid for second, though Strand was able to fend off the charge at the exit of turn two.

Edginton slipped up the track the following lap, which allowed Strand to close on Corcoran as the leaders approached lapped traffic for the first time at the midway point. This allowed Edginton to close back in to make it a three-car battle for the top spot.

Corcoran began to cycle through lapped traffic with 10 to go with the podium still separated by less than 1 second. Corcoran caught the next wave of lapped traffic with seven to go as all the cars were basically running the same lane on the quarter-mile “Bullring” following a brief rain delay around 9 p.m.

Strand continued to hound Corcoran through the three to go mark before he showed his nose to Corcoran for the first time in turn four as the race wound down to the final pair of circuits.

The leaders were unable to lap any more traffic, which kept the top three within striking distance for the win. Corcoran was able to hold off Strand and Edginton to win his first race at the speedway since 2020.

Kelsi Pederson and Brad Seng rounded out the top five.

In the WoO Sprint feature, Garet Williamson garnered the victory.
