Becker, Stearns, Nelson, Zabel and Christ crank it up during Kids Night Friday at Aberdeen
By Spencer Heupel
ABERDEEN, SD (August 1) - The yearly Kids Night was on tap at Brown County Speedway Friday, with a lot of fun, candy and prizes for the kids in the stands.
Everyone was treated to a beautiful evening of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racing, with 92 cars in the pit area in the five classes. Also on tap for the program was the makeup feature for the Super Stocks from June 27. Winners included Chad Becker, Billie Christ, Dawson Zabel, Mike Stearns, and Trevor Nelson.
The WISSOTA Super Stock makeup feature was first to hit the track, led to green by Mark Abeln and Dominique Menzia. Abeln was the early leader, but that was short-lived as caution struck on lap two.
On the ensuing restart, Abeln was under fire from Trevor Nelson and Derek Zastrow; the top three began to put distance on the field as they circled the heavy, wet track.
The leaders began to navigate lapped traffic with only six to go. Abeln had an issue with traffic, which opened the door for Nelson and Zastrow to both get by. Coming to the white flag, Nelson and a lapped car got together, which allowed Zastrow to pull even at the line. Nelson drove a clean and fast final lap, however, to garner his fourth win at BCS this year. Zastrow, Abeln, Austin Arbogast and Robin Schmitt rounded out the top five.
WISSOTA Street Stocks rolled onto the track with 16 drivers on hand. Dusty Hyatt and Billie Christ brought the field to green, and Christ shot out like a rocket using the high side. The field behind Christ had action all over the place as Maria Broksieck drove into second and began to tail Christ, and Corey Moser found his way up to third from eighth.
As the leader caught lapped traffic, caution struck with only seven laps to go. After the restart, Christ remained tough along the top, while Moser began to challenge Broksieck for second. Tenth-starter Tony Smith, found his way to fourth, and then joined the battle for second.
As the checkered flag flew Christ scored his first win of the year at BCS. Broksieck, Moser, Smith, and Jodie Michaelsohn rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were 21 strong, led to green by Todd Stark and Connor Blumhardt. Stark had the early advantage, but caution struck on lap two.
Following the restart, Dawson Zabel found the top side and easily moved his way into second. Zabel began battling Stark side by side, with Zabel getting the lead. Stark followed Zabel to the top, as Kyle Anderson reeled in the top two.
Just as the leaders were going to start making their way through lapped traffic, caution struck with only six to go. Anderson used the bottom to challenge Zabel, and the duo were side by side coming to the white flag. Zabel hit his marks on the final lap to win in back-to-back weeks at Brown County Speedway. Anderson, Brennon Weight, Stark and Blake Adams rounded out the top five.
Mike Stearns (Cody Papke Photo)
The WISSOTA Modifieds were next, with 15 drivers on hand. Dale Ames and Mike Stearns set the field with Stearns grabbing the early lead. Blake Adams and Nate Heinrich both rolled the bottom to get into second and third, respectively, as they tried to track down Stearns. The field was flying around the track and Stearns was in lapped traffic with eight laps to go. As he worked through traffic, Adams and Heinrich began battling for second. Caution struck with two to go and the field regrouped.
The restart brought more of the same as Stearns checked out to score his fourth win at BCS. Adams, Heinrich, Ames and Dylan Zabel rounded out the top five.
Trevor Nelson (Cody Papke Photo)
The WISSOTA Super Stocks had 19 drivers on hand for their regularly scheduled feature. Kyle Elsen and Mark Abeln led the field to green, and Abeln was the early leader. Farther back, ninth-starter Nelson was the show, as he worked his way into second during the first three laps.
Abeln was under fire from Nelson by lap five and two laps later the No. 71 took the lead. Caution struck at the halfway point and on the ensuing restart, Abeln timed it perfectly to rocket past Nelson to regain the lead. He then bobbled on the cushion the following lap and gave the lead back to Nelson.
Nelson began to pull away, while second to seventh became a hornets’ nest, with drivers trading spots every lap. Nelson drove on to the win and doubled up on the night for his fifth win at BCS. Elsen, Stewart Schipke, Abeln and Bryson North rounded out the top five.

The night cap was the WISSOTA Late Models with 21 drivers on hand. The race was action packed and caution free. Mike Stearns and Thomas Weisgram brought the field to green, with Stearns grabbing the early lead. It was a fast-paced race, as the leaders were in lapped traffic by lap six.
Weisgram closed in and took the lead while the front-runners diced through traffic. Trevor Anderson found his way to the lead duo and took second from Stearns. Anderson then caught and battled Weisgram with 12 to go, using lapped cars to take the lead.
Weisgram battled back and regained the top spot as traffic became heavier. Anderson took the lead back from Weisgram once more, and as Weisgram became bottled up behind traffic; Josh Skorczewski - who was now in third - drove by Weisgram for second. As the race raged on Chad Becker came to life and took third with just two laps to go.
Going into the final corner Anderson ran the top, which left the bottom open for Becker to attempt a haymaker slider. He cleared Anderson and took the victory, his fourth win at BCS. Anderson, Skorczewski, Kent Arment and Wesigram rounded out the top five.
