Weiss wins second straight WISSOTA Midwest Mod main Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway

By Todd Narveson

SPRING VALLEY, MN (August 24) - It was the final night for track points at Deer Creek Speedway for 2024 on Saturday, with a couple of point battles up for grabs if the right scenarios played out. In two of those races that is what exactly happened. The King of the Creek title also came down to the final race of the night.

In WISSOTA-sanctioned action, Mitch Weiss won his second feature in a row in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.

The Mid Mods ran their 18-lap feature first. Weiss quickly worked from fifth to the lead while Christopher Deno got to second. Weiss checked out and led all 18 laps in a race that went green to checkered.

Adam Martinson passed Deno for second, with Deno third. Kadden Kath was fourth and took his third straight point championship. Barry Johnson had another good run to round out the top five.

Drama reigned supreme in the point chase for the USRA Hobby Stocks. Dustin Gulbrandson held a 26-point lead over Nick Schwebach going into the final race. Gulbrandson redrew the pole while Schwebach started fourth.

Gulbrandson held the early lead, but Jason Newkirk applied heavy pressure. The pack was four wide for fourth in a wild tussle. Newkirk took the lead on lap five, while it looked like something broke on the left front of Gulbrandson’s car; he slowed and the caution flew.

Newkirk led on the restart, but Schwebach challenged. They had a great race for a few laps until Schwebach took the lead on lap 10. After a caution, Schwebach opened up the lead, but the race behind him for second on back was incredible.

There were eight cars in tight formation that swapped spots back and forth. One last yellow flag set up a green, white, checkered dash to the finish. Schwebach took off and led the pack to the checkered flag and his second straight track title.

Blake Schneekloth was second, with Gavin Bussinger third. Newkirk ended up fourth and 15th-starter Steve Dwyer was fifth.

The USRA B-Mod point championship was also decided on the final lap of their 18-lap feature. Defending track champion Hunter Kennedy entered the night 25 points ahead of Dustin Kruse. Kruse started from the pole and Kennedy started seventh.

Taylor Skauge took the early advantage, but Kruse led lap three. Skauge fired back to lead lap four by .002 of a second. Skauge led with Kruse right with him, while Jake Richards ran a distant third.

Kruse rallied to take the lead with two to go, but a yellow came out to set up another green, white, checkered dash to the finish. At this point with Kruse in the lead, Hunter Kennedy had to finish eighth or better to win the title and that is where he was positioned on the restart.

Kruse darted away for his fourth win of the year. Skauge finished second and Richards was third. Noah Grinstead drove from 12th to fourth and Kaeden Bronner was fifth. Kennedy ended up ninth, so Kruse took the championship by one point.

The USRA Stock Car feature was a dandy. Kyle Falck and Brayden Gjere waged battle up front. Gjere led lap one, but Falck threw a slider on lap two to take the lead. Gjere returned the favor in turn two of lap three, but Falck slid Gjere in turn three to lead the lap.

Gjere regained the lead before a yellow flag slowed the race on lap four. Falck and Gjere continued to race hard up front, and Gjere again took the lead on lap 14, but Falck threw yet another slider on lap 16 to take the lead again.

Once again Gjere powered back by Falck on lap 17 and led the final three laps for his 14th win overall in 2024. Falck was second while Brandon Hare ran third and secured the track title. Lucas Schott was fourth and Levi Sand finished in fifth.

Joe Chisholm secured the USRA Modified track title by just taking the green flag in the feature race. Chisholm had to win the feature to take the King of the Creek.

Spencer Stock was chased by Lucas Schott for the lead while Nick Murgic and Keith Foss raced for third early on in the feature. Schott moved out front on lap five while Foss got to third.

Jim Chisholm was on the move and got past Murgic and Foss before two yellows slowed the race on lap 10 and 11. Jim Chisholm took the lead on the restart and led lap 12. Schott got back by on lap 13, but Chisholm regained the spot before the caution returned. Brandon Davis had worked his way to third from the 11th spot.

Jim Chisholm led on the start while Davis got to second. Aaron Benson was on the move and into third before the final caution flew on lap 23. Chisholm led the final two laps for the win while Benson got to second with Davis third. Schott finished fourth and Joe Chisholm was fifth.

With Joe Chisholm finishing fifth, Kadden Kath is King of the Creek champion, worth $1,000.
