Peterson and Stark steal leads late and brother-sister duo Konold and Broksieck bolt to feature wins at Casino
By Tony Steuck
WATERTOWN, SD (August 24) - Tyler Peterson and Todd Stark both used late-race passes for victory at Casino Speedway on Sunday night, while a pair of siblings — Tony Konold and Maria Broksieck — each made a trip to victory lane as well during WISSOTA Dirt Track Series competition.
Chad Becker started on the pole of the 25-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature and bolted to the early lead. Mike Stearns worked into second after an early battle with Denver Nickeson, but the yellow flag waved when Becker slowed on lap four to bring out the yellow.
Stearns led the pack to the restart with Nickeson providing pressure to his outside. After a few laps, Anderson moved in to challenge Nickeson for second with Tyler Peterson lurking in closely behind that pair. Peterson made a move to third, but the pass was negated by a caution with 10 laps scored.
Stearns pulled away after the restart, and Nickeson settled into second after a few laps. Peterson, who had to check up in a turn four dust-up, had the high lane open and picked up speed as he sliced his way forward; he moved into third, then one lap later raced to the outside of Nickeson for second. Six laps remained and the difference was more than 1.5 seconds, but Peterson gained speed in the upper groove, and nosed ahead of Stearns off the top of turn four under the white flag. Peterson cruised over the final lap for his second win at the oval this season. Stearns was second ahead of Nickeson, 14th-starter Jayson Good and Anderson.
With his mechanical failure, Becker has a mere 2-point lead over Good in the standings with one more night to gain points.

Tommy Nichols had a great start from the front row of the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, and sped away to an early lead. Stark moved into second by lap two, and a short time later Lorin Johnson and Jake Wranek battled for third. Wranek secured the position before the halfway mark of the 20-lap race, and Johnson was left to battle with Terry Reilly for fourth.
Nichols continued to set the pace with a healthy margin, although when a lapped car turned sideways in front of him, it allowed Stark to close marginally. Stark appeared to narrow the gap with five to go, and the only caution of the race with three laps left helped his cause.
When the race resumed, Stark glued his car to the inside lane and inched his way under Nichols for the lead. Stark was nearly the leader to complete lap 18, and sealed the deal on the next lap to hold on for his first win at the oval this season. Nichols settled for second with Dawson Zabel third, Reilly fourth and Johnson fifth; Wranek spun in the final turn while third.
Stark and Nichols are also in contention for a Midwest Modified track championship; Nichols’ lead was trimmed to 2 points over Stark with one race left.

Konold started on the front row of the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified feature, and secured the lead a half lap into the race. After a restart with one lap complete, Tyler Peterson moved into second and looked to the inside of Konold for the lead, but lost touch after a few laps. Cayden Schmeling displaced Peterson for second before Peterson shredded a tire and a caution waved with eight laps scored.
Konold bolted away while Mike Stearns, Schmeling and Nate Heinrich had a good race for second. A caution waved with four laps remaining and Dylan Zabel moved into contention; he battled with Stearns and Heinrich before another late yellow, however he spun into turn one on the ensuing green flag.
Despite the numerous late-race restarts, Konold was up to the challenge for his first win of the season in Watertown. Heinrich was second ahead of Stearns, Adam Brotherton and Dale Ames.
Stearns’ advantage in the point standings decreased slightly to 16 headed into the final night.

Konold’s sister, Maria Broksieck, started on the pole of the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature and snatched the early lead, while Andy Rossow followed her into second. Rossow trailed by about three to five car lengths after five laps, while Matt Goth raced in a distant third. The first yellow dropped with seven of 25 laps scored. Another yellow on the next lap removed two drivers from the top five, and Jason Marko — who accepted the challenge to start last for an additional $1,000 to win — restarted fifth; Marko followed Goth around Rossow and applied heavy pressure to Goth for second. He used the high side to make the pass with 13 laps scored, and the yellow waved which erased his deficit to the leader.
Marko challenged Broksieck for the lead when the race resumed, but after a few laps of heat, Broksieck edged away. A pair of cautions fell late in the race, but Broksieck remained steady at the front for her third win of the season in Watertown. Tyler Lamb found speed in the last handful of laps, and he weaved his way through the top five, and held second briefly before Marko regained the spot at the checkers. Lamb was third with Goth fourth and Zach Flickinger fifth.
Rossow did not finish the event, which moved Broksieck to the top of the Street Stock standings by seven points.
The rough-and-tumble Gen X Late Model feature was not decided until after the checkered flag fell. Apparent winner Trevor Walsh did not clear post-race inspection, and handed the victory to Alex Tschakert, the first of his career at Casino.
There was a tense moment in the feature when Brittany Swenson barrel rolled in turns three and four; she was uninjured.
