HURON, SD (August 17) - WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action was part of the program at Dakota State Fair Speedway Saturday, August 17, as the track also played host to the Tri-State Late Model group.

Winners in sanctioned action included Dale Ames, Trevor Nelson, David Simpson, and Maria Broksieck.

David Simpson of Thunder Bay, Ontario, made the trek to Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday and came away with the victory in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature.

Simpson, who started on the outside of the front row in the 15-lap main event, is the current national points leader in the division. He led from start to finish to secure his 20th win in 63 events this season.

“We’re just chasing national points,” Simpson said of his reasoning behind the trek south.

“This is a beautiful facility. It’s too bad it only has four races a year,” he told a packed grandstands after the race. “The crew does an awesome job.”

Matt Heinzerling capitalized on the second of two cautions in the race to move into the second spot on lap seven and stayed there the final eight laps. Jayme Peterson, who held second for three laps, was third.

Rounding out the top five were Jake Wranek and Scott Hansen.

The WISSOTA Modifieds returned to Dakota State Fair Speedway for the first time in two years on Saturday, and Dale Ames secured his first win of the season at his hometown track.

Ames started on the pole and led for the duration of the 15-lap feature race.

“It’s always awesome to win here,” said Ames, who now has a total seven career wins at the track. “I want to dedicate this win to my dad, Larry, as I have with all my wins.

“My whole family is involved with this track and we love this place,” he said.

Mike Stearns, who is the current national points leader in the WISSOTA Modified standings, was second. Dylan Zabel was third, followed by Chaun Peterson and Dave Brooker.

Maria Broksieck and Trevor Nelson continued their winning ways on Saturday at DSFS in the WISSOTA Street Stock and Super Stock divisions, respectively.

Broksieck started third in the 14-car Street Stock feature race and moved to the front of the pack before the end of the opening lap. She led from start to finish in the 12-lap race to earn her second win of the season and fifth of her career at the track.

“We had to replace the right front bearing between the heat race and the feature, so it was kind of nip and tuck to be able to get back on the track,” said Broksieck, who now has 12 wins this season.

Grady Myers, who started on the pole, held on to finish second. Jayden Bogh moved up three spots to finish third, while Chris Serr was fourth and Broc Stout was fifth.

After powering around polesitter Jeremy North during a restart on the sixth lap, Trevor Nelson cruised to his 13th win of the season in the Super Stock main event.

Nelson, who now owns six career wins at the Huron track, started eighth in the 13-car field and was running third after three laps.

North drifted back into a battle for the runner-up spot with Corey Elward, who started fourth.

Elward got past North with five laps remaining, but the battle remained intense. So much so that the two drivers were asked to leave the track following an incident that brought out the final caution with just two laps remaining in the race.

Austin Arbogast inherited the second spot and stayed there the final two laps. Brad Kopecky edged Derek Zastrow for third at the finish line and Shawn Schnabel was fifth.

Chad Olsen returned to victory lane at Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday after a two-year hiatus.

Olsen led 24 of the 25 laps to win the Tri-State Late Model Series feature race and claim the $2,000 top prize.

Saturday’s program concluded the 2024 racing season at DSFS. Longtime DSFS track promoter Orville Chenoweth announced during the pit meeting that future plans for the speedway won’t be announced until November.
