DSFS racers and fans put a bow on 2026 season; final features go to Skorczewski, Nelson, Zabel and Stout

HURON, SD (August 14) - Four track champions were crowned Saturday at Dakota State Fair Speedway, capping the 2026 season. Feature winners in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action included Josh Skorczewski, Trevor Nelson, Dawson Zabel and Broc Stout.

The program marked the 13th race in the first full racing season at the Huron track since 2017.

The closest battle for a track title this season came in the WISSOTA Street Stock division.

Stout, who won Street Stock titles in 2014 and 2016 at DSFS, needed to finish in the top 10 during Saturday’s feature race to accomplish the feat for a third time. He did just that by claiming his second win of the season, and the 22nd of his career at the track.

After starting fourth in the 18-car field, Stout snagged the lead on the opening lap of 15-lap feature race and stayed out front to earn the win and clinch the track title.

“It’s pretty unbelievable,” Stout said of winning the track title. “It’s been a long season with a lot of ups and downs.”

Matt Goth, who started a row behind Stout in fifth, also worked his way to the front. He snagged second from Michael Bogh on the fourth lap and held the spot the rest of the way.

Maria Broksieck, who had three wins including her 100th career feature win this season at DSFS, was third. Rounding out the top five were Jayden Bogh and Michael Bogh, respectively.

The other three classes that run on a weekly basis throughout the 2026 season at DSFS all had first-time track champions.

Jayme Peterson tried to match Stout’s effort in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature by earning the feature win while also earning the track championship. His effort fell just short on the first end of the deal.

Dawson Zabel claimed his second Midwest Modified win of the season and just the second of his career at the Huron oval on Saturday. He used the high side of the track coming out of turn two on the third lap and led the rest of the way in the 15-lap feature race.

“The car was really good,” Zabel said. “On this big track it’s good to get out in clean air, so we were fortunate to start near the front.”

Peterson, who started seventh in the 11-car field, passed Tracy Johnson for second on lap four, but was unable to catch the leader during the final 11 laps of the caution-free race.

“The car felt good,” Peterson said. “We were able to get things going and try to run down some guys.”

Scott Hansen was third, followed by Jake Wranek and Johnson.

With a total of 540 points this season, Peterson had a 23-point advantage over Wranek, who claimed the runner-up honors, in the Midwest Modified final standings.

Trevor Nelson (Allen Becker Photo)

Trevor Nelson joined his father, Gregg, as a WISSOTA Super Stock track champion on Saturday at DSFS. He earned his sixth win of the season at the track to put an exclamation point on the 2026 season.

“It’s pretty cool to be a track champion here and have my name up there with my dad,” said Nelson.

Brad Kopecky started on the outside of the front row and led the first two laps of the 15-lap feature race. Nelson used the low groove in turn to take over the top spot and led the final 13 laps.

Bryson North, who started a row ahead of Nelson, passed Kopecky for the second spot on lap nine.

The lone caution of the race came with one lap remaining, setting up a green-white-checkered finish, allowing the rest of the field one more crack at stealing the lead from Nelson. It didn’t materialize, however, as he pulled away for the win.

North was second, followed by Austin Arbogast, Kopecky and Brian Hoing.

Josh Skorczewski (Allen Becker Photo)

Josh Skorczewski, who was the 2011 WISSOTA Late Model Rookie of the Year at Dakota State Fair Speedway, can now add 2026 DSFS Late Model track champion to his list of accomplishments at the Huron track.

Skorczewski picked up his third win of the season and seventh of his career during the season championships on Saturday. He led from start to finish in the caution-free 20-lap feature race.

“The car felt really, really good,” Skorczewski said in victory lane.

Dustin Arthur held second for the first 11 laps of the race, before leaving the track with mechanical issues. Peyton Geurge inherited second and stayed there, while Brandon Sprinkel was third.

Rounding out the top five were Ryan Baumgart and John Hoing.

Skorczewski finished the season with 418 points, which put him 48 points ahead of Justin Karlen

Jordan and Josh Sterrett, who took over as track promoters at DSFS this season, thanked fans, drivers and crews for their patronage during the 2026 campaign. They said changes are already in the works for the 2027 racing season at the Huron track, including the addition of a fifth class to race on a weekly basis.
