Nelson knocks down Super Stock field to win Dave Shackleton Memorial at Red Cedar Speedway
MENOMONIE, WI (July 24) - Red Cedar Speedway hosted its annual Dave Shackleton Memorial for the WISSOTA Super Stocks, as well as the Fast Lane Northland Super Stock Series Friday night, with the WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Midwest Mods and USRA Late Models also part of Friday’s action.
Winners in WISSOTA-sanctioned action included Dylan Nelson, Blake Adams, Nick Koehler and Sam Mars.
Koehler was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, before a parking-lot sized wreck occurred out of turn four when Stai lost the handle on his No. 1 while running second.
Back under green, Koehler had pressure from Brady Larson; they were side by side around the Menomonie oval before Koehler recaptured the spot and pulled out to a slight advantage.
Koehler built his edge on the field over the remaining laps and took the victory ahead of David Baxter, Larson, ninth-starter Shadow Kitchner and Brandon Jensen in the top five.
A.J. Diemel was the early leader of the WISSOTA Modified feature, having won the battle of the front row when polesitter Dylan Goettl drifted high out of turn two.
Blake Adams (Track Photo)
Diemel continued his dominating run until just four laps remained - a flat tire led to his demise and Adams inherited the top spot. From there Adams drove away to about a .8-plus second advantage at the checkered flag. Ben Hillman, Kennedy Swan, Jake Smith and Shane Halopka were top-five finishers.
Sam Mars (Track Photo)
Chad Mahder was the early leader of the WISSOTA Late Model feature before Dan Bargender worked his way past on the inside of Mahder with three laps in the books. Mahder fought back on the outside, regaining the lead with five laps complete. Sam Mars was close behind in third as Bargender and Mahder continued to trade the lead through lapped traffic. With 11 laps to go Mahder’s lead was .552 seconds, as Mars slipped by Bargender to second.
As the front duo continued to march through backmarkers, Mars grabbed the lead with less than a handful of laps remaining and drove to the victory ahead of Mahder, Kevin Burdick, Ashley Anderson and Bargender in the top five.
Dylan Nelson (Track Photo)
Noah Shackleton was the early leader of the Super Stock headliner, before he spun in turn four. Another caution on the ensuing restart kept things at a stop-and-go pace.
Nelson officially led the first lap once the wreckage was cleared, as Andrew Davis and Rick Simpson fought for second.
As the laps continued on, Nelson increased his lead ahead of the field. Davis came under fire from D.J. Keeler, as Simpson and Shawn McFadden held top five spots.
Nelson remained in control by more than 7 seconds in the waning laps, even through lapped traffic. Nelson put on a clinic and took the victory, as McFadden finished his drive to the front in second. Keeler, 17th-starter Kyle Copp and Davis were top-five finishers.
In the USRA Late Model feature, Cooper Sundby took advantage of a restart with 10 to go to take the lead from Patrick Kelley. He survived a late-race caution with three to go to take his second-straight checkered flag and first at his home track. Josh Wahlstrom and Kelley completed the podium.
