Rain halts Princeton program early, but not before Myers and Pogones pull off wins Friday night

By Tami Jo Kuehn

PRINCETON, MN (July 18) - The USMTS Modifieds made their first-ever stop at Princeton Speedway Friday for the first night of the 5th annual Mod Wars. There were 109 drivers signed in for action, which was cut short at the end of the night thanks to Mother Nature.

Tommy Pogones and Curt Myers claimed WISSOTA Dirt Track Series victories.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were first on the agenda, led to green by Lucas Boyce and A.J. Kellar. Boyce and Kellar remained door to door during the opening laps, until Kellar broke free with a few laps in the books. Boyce held second with Pogones to his bumper. Pogones slid by for the spot and chased after Kellar in the lead.

A handful of laps remained when a caution was triggered; when the race resumed, Kellar, Pogones, and Boyce were three wide for first. Pogones emerged with the lead and held the point to the checkered flag. Kellar, Boyce, Thomas Worth and Trent Keller were top-five finishers.

Dexton Koch and Alex Myers brought the WISSOTA Super Stocks to green, with a great field of drivers making the call. Koch claimed the lead at the end of lap one, but a couple cautions reset the field.

Austin Niemeyer took second while Curt Myers and Alex Myers made the battle three-wide back under green. Curt grabbed the position and chased after Koch, eventually catching him and making the pass for the lead with slower traffic mixed in. Shane Sabraski took over second and looked ahead to Curt Myers with only two laps to go. Sabraski closed the gap, but Myers had enough of an advantage to hold onto the lead and garner the victory. Sabraski, Dylan Nelson, Koch and Niemeyer completed the top five.

A great mix of USMTS and WISSOTA Modifieds took the track to battle it out in the Mod Wars. Jim Chisholm was the early leader of the 40-lap race, sailing away with the lead until lapped traffic came into play in the latter stages of the feature. Chisholm fended off the efforts of Reece Solander in the final few laps and took the checkered flag. Solander, Gary Christian, Dave Cain and Clayton Wagamon rounded out the top five.

With three WISSOTA Dirt Track Series features left, Mother Nature cut the night short by dropping rain on the speedway. Midwest Modifieds, Mod Fours and Hornets will have makeup features at a later date, with those details being announced soon.
