Simpson scores first-ever “big” Mod win at Thunder City and Chernosky doubles up, with fenders and without

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (July 16) - Cole Chernosky doubled up on victories Wednesday, July 16 at Thunder City Speedway and David Simpson did the same - including winning his first-ever WISSOTA Modified feature.

Other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners at the Thunder Bay oval included Kyle Bolt and Selena Owen.

In the WISSOTA Modified makeup feature from June 25, Simpson started on the pole and ran second for much of the race. With two laps to go, he made the pass on race-long leader Scott McKinnon to take the lead and drove on to the victory. McKinnon had to settle for second, sixth-starter Brandon Copp was third, Riley Matthews was fourth and Joel Cryderman rounded out the top five.

In the regularly scheduled Modified A-main, Chernosky started fourth and worked his way to the front early, taking the lead around lap three and commanding the field from there to the checkered flag. He was chased across the stripe by Curtis Stieh, ninth-starter McKinnon, eighth-starter Simpson and Cryderman in the top five.

Simpson started outside the second row in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, working into the lead with a handful of laps complete after a side-by-side battle with national point leader Tyler Vernon. He kept Vernon at bay from there on out, taking the checkered flag. Vernon, Stieh, Michael Shalley and Tanner Ulakovic were top-five finishers.

Chernosky started from the pole in the WISSOTA Super Stocks and held sway from flag to flag to garner the win. Seventh-starter Rick Simpson improved five spots to second, Nathan Roy was third, Andrew Groom was fourth, and Shawn Polonoski completed the top five.

Kyle Bolt topped the WISSOTA Street Stock feature from his fourth starting spot. He took the lead during lap two and never looked back en route to the win, holding a little more than .6 of a second-lead ahead of national title contender Kolton Brauer in second. Trey Hess, A.J. Kellar and Darren Wolframe completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Hornets, Owen won her third feature in a row at Thunder City, taking the lead for good with a couple laps left and hanging on by a scant .027 of a second ahead of Jesse Owen to net the checkered flag. Martin Bolt, Spencer Smith and ninth-starter Jaxson Gregory completed the top five.
