Adams and Broksieck answer the WISSOTA call at Casino Speedway and Stearns nabs USMTS win

WATERTOWN, SD (July 16) - Blake Adams and Maria Broksieck carried the torch for WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racing on Thursday at Casino Speedway, as the Watertown oval hosted a special night with the UMSTS on hand in addition to the WISSOTA Midwest Mods and Street Stocks. The Gen X Late Models were also part of the program.

In the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Kenneth Clements and Andy Rossow led the field to the green flag. Rossow was the early leader, with Clements second, and Al Schmidt in third. Clements spun and collected several racers in the process.

Back under green Rossow continued to lead, as Bogh drove into second and Broksieck worked past Schmidt. With 15 to go, Schmidt went around the caution flew once again.

Broksieck took second behind Rossow with the green back out over the field with 14 to go. Bogh was third, Tyler Lamb was fourth.

Out front Broksieck slipped past Rossow into the lead, leaving Rossow and Bogh to fight back and forth for second. Lamb was still fourth, just ahead of Jason Marko.

With eight to go Marko drove by Lamb to fourth, as Bogh had pulled back to the bumper of Broksieck. After making contact with Broksieck’s bumper he spun, sending him to the rear of the field with seven to go.

As Broksieck held the lead back under green, Marko gained second from Rossow. Lamb and Clements held top-five spots as well.

Broksieck drove on to victory lane ahead of Marko, Rossow, Lamb, and Bogh in the top five.

Dawson Zabel and Lane Johnson brought the WISSOTA Midwest Mods to the green flag, and immediately the war was on. Behind them, Luke Johnson, Adams and Todd Stark were three wide for a top-five spot before Adams and Stark left Luke behind; they fought for second side by side behind the side-by-side battle ahead of them for the lead.

Stark made it three wide for the lead heading into turn three the next lap, with Zabel the meat in the sandwich between the No. 33 and Lane Johnson. Cars were spun in turn two and that threw cold water on the thrilling action at the front of the field.

Zabel led the field back to green ahead of Lane Johnson and Stark; Zabel pulled away slightly before Johnson appeared to slow dramatically in turn four. Stark wheel hopped the No. 3jr and brother Luke spun in the aftermath. Once again the field was under yellow.

Back under green Zabel continued to lead, as Adams grabbed second from Stark. Adams drove to the bottom and closed to the bumper of Zabel, but Zabel continued to control the lead.

With 13 to go, Adams continued to test out different lines around the race track, as just ahead lapped traffic loomed. Zabel and Adams were side by side before Adams was held up by a lapped car in the low lane and Zabel escaped - albeit briefly - two laps later.

As Zabel and Adams came around into turn four, the race really heated up. With Zabel a lane up from the bottom and Blake on the inside lane, they charged into turn four with another lapped car just ahead. They remained side by side into turn one with 10 laps to go, and the lapped traffic side by side ahead of them. Adams dove to the inside of the first lapped car, while Zabel took the ultra high side to get by, right on the bumper of another lapped car in the middle lane. Adams had the advantage out of the turn, but it was all for naught, as another spun racer regrouped the field.

Zabel led the field back to green but was slid into turn one by Adams; Zabel crossed him back over and regained the lead at the stripe. Adams replicated the move the following lap, and had enough of an advantage down the backstretch to pull away from Zabel. Stark was third, Johnson was fourth and 14th-starter Darren Engesser was fifth. Another spinner with six to go brought out the caution.

Adams continued to lead back under green, as Zabel, Stark, Scott Hansen and Johnson held top-five spots. Stark was under heavy pressure from Hansen for third, with Johnson also in the mix for the spot. The three-way fight for third began to catch Zabel in second.

Out front, Adams eased away from the field and drove into victory lane. Zabel was second, Stark was third, Hansen was fourth and Luke Johnson completed the top five.

In the USMTS feature, a local track favorite made good against the national competition, as Mike Stearns took home his first-ever series feature win. Stearns patiently worked his way forward along the bottom of the race track, taking command with about 15 to go. Jim Chisholm, who had led to that point, moved back in to challenge Stearns side by side several times. Stearns hit his marks, however, pulled away at the end and took the checkered flag for the monumental victory.

Bodie Croninger topped Gen X Late Model action.
