Becker and Stearns repeat, Nelson and Bogh bolt to WISSOTA wins on night two at Brown County

By Spencer Heupel

ABERDEEN, SD (July 12) - Brown County Speedway hosted the second night of the Andy Daly Memorial Saturday, with 114 drivers in the pits. Extra pay was on the line in every class, with the top prize being a $3,012 check to the winner of the WISSOTA Super Stocks.

Jayden Bogh, Chad Becker, Trevor Nelson and Mike Stearns were the lucky winners to score the paydays in their respective WISSOTA Dirt Track Series classes.

Fifteen WISSOTA Street Stock drivers were on hand for a $612 payday. Jayden Michaelsohn and Broc Stout brought the field to green, with Stout grabbing the lead. Caution struck on lap two, however, and it turned into the theme of the feature.

Andy Rossow moved into second following the drop of the green, but caution struck again on lap four. During the next restart, Rossow peeked to the inside of Stout a few times, but couldn’t get by. Stout began to open up a gap on the field, as Jayden Bogh moved by Rossow for second.

Caution struck once again on lap 11. Bogh moved to the inside of Stout following the restart and took the lead. Caution struck again two laps later; Stout spun and collected Dusty Hyatt, ending both of their nights.

The field restarted and ticked off another lap before caution struck again. The race director brought it to a green, white, checkered finish. Bogh pulled away on the final restart and took the victory, his third at the track this year. Rossow, Spence Pollock, Michaelsohn and Kyle Bertram were top-five finishers.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were up next with 14 drivers on hand for the $1,012 winner’s share. Mike Stearns and Dylan Zabel brought the field to green but going into turn one, Stearns had his right-front tire go flat and he drew the caution. Under yellow Travis Saurer had cut his right rear tire at the same time; the drivers had their tires changed and rejoined the field in the tail.

With a complete restart regrouping the field, Zabel and Dale Ames battled hard for the opening laps, until Ames edged ahead to take the lead. Adam Brotherton began to challenge Zabel for second, before caution struck with 11 to go.

Following the restart, Stearns moved back into second before caution struck again. The restart was the final one, and Stearns threw a slider at Ames to take the lead. Stearns was on a rail and was in traffic with four to go; he made easy work of any traffic, however, and won his third feature at BCS and swept the weekend in dominating fashion. Ames, Brotherton, ninth-starter Garrett Gross and Zabel were top-five finishers.

Chad Becker (Cody Papke Photo)

There were 26 WISSOTA Late Models on track next for their $2,012 reward. It was an uncle-nephew front row, with Chad Becker and Konnor Sperle bringing the field to green. Becker edged ahead to grab the top spot, but as the trend of the night continued, a caution regrouped the field on lap three.

Becker blasted back out to the lead only for caution to strike again on lap six. During the next restart, 10th-starter Thomas Weisgram moved into third. Weisgram began to challenge Sperle for second while Becker started to open up a huge advantage on the field.

Becker’s pace had him in lapped traffic with 14 to go, but it was short-lived as a caution waved one lap later. During the next restart, 11th-starter Kent Arment made a move from fifth to second and set his sights on Becker.

As the lead duo began to pull away from the field, Becker slipped up and over the cushion in turn four, which allowed Arment to pounce and take the lead. Becker fought back and they swapped the lead for multiple laps until Becker regained control.

While that happened up front, 15th-starter Chase Gelling moved into third and looked ahead to track down the leaders. The caution flag struck again with three to go.

Back under green Arment made multiple attempts to pass Becker, but Becker was too strong and denied Arment to take the feature victory. Josh Skorczewski, 15th-starter Chase Gelling and 12th-starter Travis Saurer completed the top five.

Trevor Nelson (Cody Papke File Photo)

The night cap was the big $3,012 race for the WISSOTA Super Stocks, with 26 drivers on hand. Trevor Nelson and Stewart Schipke brought the field to green and Nelson led early. The caution bug continued, as it struck on lap four.

Curt Myers moved into second with the green back out, and began to fight Nelson for the lead. Myers ran the inside while Nelson was up on the narrow cushion. The battle raged on for almost 10 laps until Nelson got a big run and cleared Myers. The caution struck again with 13 to go.

Following the restart, Myers took advantage of Nelson turning the top and took the lead. As the race ran on, 16th-starter Jordan Henkemeyer moved his way into fourth and began bidding for third. The yellow flag flew again with only six laps remaining.

On the final restart of the night, Myers shot out of a cannon and opened up a good lead, but Nelson stuck to the cushion and began to reel Myers back in. The duo were side by side for the final three laps. Coming to the white flag they were neck and neck.

On the final lap Nelson fiddled with the cushion, which allowed him to beat Myers to the line by .197 seconds to score the big win at his home track. Myers, Hedtke, Henkemeyer and 24th-starter Austin Arbogast rounded out the top five.

The INEX Legends were also in attendance for the South Dakota INEX Legends Nationals, with 33 drivers on hand. Twenty-four drivers made the dance, and it was the race of the night to see Noah Madler fending off Donavan Wiest by .009 seconds to score the $1,200 win.
