Brauer bags Street Stock main as only one feature finished at Thunder City before rain sets in
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (June 25) - The original plans for Thunder City Speedway race fans Wednesday night included a special bonus in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, where the winner was set to take home a cool $750. Mother Nature had other plans, however, and the program was rained out following the WISSOTA Street Stock feature.
In that feature, A.J. Kellar moved forward from the second row to hold the slightest of advantages over third-row starter Kolton Brauer to lead lap one. One lap later Brauer drove into the lead, with Kellar remaining close behind. Trey Hess was also part of the battle out front.
At about the halfway point of the race, a large wreck into the backstretch wall brought the field back together again and gave Kellar another viable shot at Brauer.
During this yellow flag, the rain was falling lightly; back under green, Brauer had heavy pressure from Kellar and Kellar regained the lead on lap 12.
Kellar and Brauer continued to run closely together, and on the final lap Brauer nosed to the inside of Kellar. They came off the final corner side by side, and Brauer edged out Kellar to take the win in a thrilling photo finish. Hess, Andrew Piilo, and Tyson Waller were top-five finishers.
The rains then picked up and the racing for the night was over, with the other four WISSOTA-sanctioned races rained out.
