The latest Kings of Dirt get crowned at I-94 Speedway, including Mass, Smith, Randt and Rohner

By Ron Krog

FERGUS FALLS, MN (May 29) - A nice field of 133 cars filled the pits at I-94 Speedway for the very popular Dick Johanneck King of the Dirt show. It was a jam-packed program, as it was also Hall of Fame Night and Kids’ Night.

The track inducted Dick Johanneck and Scott Engfer into the I-94 Speedway Hall of Fame, and kids walked away with lots of prizes and goodies.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Dave Mass, Jake Smith, Levi Randt, and Jeff Rohner.

Racing started with the WISSOTA Street Stocks. The youngster Randt collected his first-ever King of Dirt win. He took the early lead ahead of a great battle between Cole Greseth and Eric Riley for second. They fought back and forth throughout the race as they continued to try to chase down Randt. Randt was able to hang on though and picked up the win. Kyle Dykhoff improved four spots to second, Greseth was third, Riley was fourth, and Justin Vogel was fifth.

Jake Smith (Track Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Mods were well represented by a big field of 31 cars. Early on, Jake Smith jumped out to the lead, with Tommy Nichols right behind him - soon joined by Tyler Bitzan and Corey Storck. It was a war for top-five spots, with Lucas Rodin and Landon Randt also joining in. Mechanical issues then knocked out both Bitzan and Randt and they headed to the pits.

Storck and Smith went back and forth for the lead, exchanging the top spot before Smith hung on for the win, followed by Storck. Rodin finished third, Memphis Klassen was fourth and Nate Reinke completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature was led early on by Tyler Peterson, with pressure from Dexton Koch. As the race wore down, Dave Mass continued to work his way to the front, getting by Cole Schill, who was also right in the thick of the hunt. Mass caught Peterson and was able to slip by him as they went back and forth several times for the top spot. Mass held on for the win, with Peterson second, followed by Travis Saurer. Schill and Danny Vang rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Hornets feature a great lineup of 22 racers. The early leader of the feature was Lincoln Miller, a young guy who had never won before. Miller held on to a nice early lead, and hung on through the halfway point before a very fast, 10th-starting Jeff Rohner started working his way to the front. He caught second-place Chase Poirrier, racing back and forth for the spot, before he took second and then snuck by Miller for the win, with Poirrier right behind him. Miller was third, Adam Throener was fourth and Christian Kast was fifth.

In the USRA Northern Lights Series feature, the WISSOTA racers gave it their best shot, with great action up front among Joe Chisholm, Dusty Bitzan, Brady Gerdes, Brandon Dolman and Rodney Sanders, but at the checkered flag Chisholm’s USRA ride came out on top for the victory. Gerdes, Sanders, Bitzan and Ryan Gierke filled out the top five.

Ben Wolden ran a strong race to win the Gen X Late Model feature.
