Gerdes, Lund, Randt, Dykhoff and Albertson post “prelude” night wins at I-94 the night before planned King Of Dirt

By Ron Krog

FERGUS FALLS, MN (June 6) - Back in 2010, I-94 Speedway decided host a special in honor of former owner Dick Johanneck, creating the King of Dirt special complete with a throne and crown. Racers and fans have really enjoyed it over the years. Now, 15 years later, the track continues to host the special weekend and Friday’s program included six classes of cars, with 128 entrants on hand for action. The DRC Street Stock Tour was also part of the program.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Brady Gerdes, William Lund, Landyn Randt, Kyle Dykhoff and Brady Albertson.

Surprisingly, the largest car count came from the WISSOTA Modifieds. A very strong field of 29 cars hit the track for what became an entertaining feature. Early on Travis Saurer and Gerdes fought side by side, with Saurer taking the early lead. Close behind were Shane Sabraski and Don Eischens, also in a hard battle for top-five positions. Though it looked like Saurer had it won, a couple cautions reset the field and Gerdes retook the lead. Eischens was all over him, and Sabraski and Ryan Gierke closed in as well. Late in the race Lucas Rodin joined the fun and it was total chaos. Gerdes edged Eischens for the win, with Sabraski close in third. Dusty Bitzan charged from 20th to finish fourth in the wild race, as Rodin finished fifth.

Kyle Dykhoff (Nick Anderson Photo)

The Dirt Race Central WISSOTA Street Stock Tour also had a great field of 28 cars, with a 24-car starting field. Justin Vogel and Eric Riley sat on the front row and led the field to green. Three laps into the 25-lapper, Kyle Dykhoff took over the lead, with Nick Traynor close in second. Two laps later Traynor had tough luck as he broke and headed to the pits.

With Dykhoff still out front, the battle for second was very intense as Vogel, Riley and Andrew Hanson went back and forth the rest of the race. Dykhoff grabbed his third straight series win followed by Riley, Hanson, Vogel and 21st-starter Jeff Ekdahl in fifth.

Landyn Randt (Nick Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Mods brought in a strong field of 25 cars for a 20-lap battle, with Matt Schow taking charge early. Four laps into the race he broke and retired to the pits. Lucas Rodin took charge out front and looked very strong for the next six laps, before Landyn Randt came flying up to steal the lead and open up a nice cushion. Behind him, Rodin and Ron Saurer went back and forth for second, and it was not long before 16th-starter Reise Stenberg moved into third. He caught a tire coming off turn four, however, and spun, relegating him to the tail of the field.

Out front, Randt drove a great race for the win followed by Rodin. Stenberg charged through the field to finish third with Haley Dykhoff grabbing a solid fourth. Saurer was fifth.

William Lund (Nick Anderson Photo)

It was fun having the WISSOTA Super Stocks back again Friday. William Lund grabbed the lead from his front-row starting spot with Sabraski right on his rear bumper. Lund drove a perfect race to get the win, followed by Sabraski, with a very impressive Tommy Bawden finishing third. Shawn Fernkes and Ryan Satter completed the top five.

Brady Albertson (Nick Anderson Photo)

Brady Albertson charged from his seventh starting spot to take the lead early and drove to the WISSOTA Hornet victory ahead of Hunter Goulet, Lincoln Miller, Travis Bruns and Ayden Muchow in the top five.

Ben Wolden took home his second-straight win in the Gen X Late Models, while the young and talented Parker Gilbertson was second ahead of Trevor Walsh and Rick Schroeder in a very good race.
