Heroes honored Friday at Red Cedar Speedway alongside winners Matthees, Hartung, Jenson, Redetzke and Kummer

MENOMONIE, WI (May 23) - Red Cedar Speedway honored the area’s community heroes Friday night, as the track in Menomonie, Wisconsin hosted WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action May 23.

Winners in sanctioned action included Lance Matthees, Jake Hartung, Brandon Jensen, Cody Kummer, and Jesse Redetzke.

Cole Richards was the early leader of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, with Dylan Baskin trying to hold off Kummer for second. Kummer drove past a lap later, as Travis Loew and Sam Fankhauser fought for top five spots. Kummer quickly caught Richards in the lead and was about to make the pass for the top spot before Loew spun in turns one and two and gave Richards new life. Loew went to the back of the pack.

Richards led the field into turn one back under green, with heavy pressure from Kummer to his inside. Out of turn four Kummer had the lead, with Baskin, Fankhauser and Caiden Engel now in the top five. Richards then experienced some sort of mechanical failure and left the track.

Kummer had a healthy two-second lead out front with six laps remaining, as Baskin held second. Fankhauser had moved into third, with Ryan Howe now fourth and Engel in fifth.

With four laps to go Kummer began to navigate lapped traffic, but had no issues. Fankhauser displaced Baskin for second before a yellow fell with two to go for a stalled racer on the backstretch.

Back under green, Kummer immediately jumped to a large advantage and slipped to the win, as Fankhauser settled into second. Baskin and Howe were side by side for third as they raced to the line, with Howe getting the final podium spot. Baskin and Engel completed the top five.

Jesse Redetzke (Chris Burback Photo)

Scott Geiger and Jesse Redetzke led the WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag, with Redetzke the early leader. Jeff Eisner, Jr., Terran Spacek and Kolby Kiehl were in the early top five.

As Redetzke grew his lead out front, Geiger was second and Spacek was pressuring Eisner for third; Spacek grabbed the spot and then quickly got by Geiger for second as well, two turns later.

Redetzke continued to roll out front, with Spacek slowly cutting into his advantage. As Redetzke began to work through lapped traffic, a backmarker spun in front of him and the field regrouped under yellow with eight to go.

With the green back out over the field, Redetzke led at the halfway point less than half a second ahead of Spacek, while Kiehl held third ahead of Tom Karis and Geiger in the top five.

Spacek began to search the track for a way past the No. 207, cutting Redetzke’s advantage to just over a quarter-second with four to go. Redetzke pulled away by another .2-seconds during the next lap, and had enough to hold on through the white flag lap and take the checkered flag. Spacek, Kiehl, Karis and Chad Johnson finished in the top five behind him.

Brandon Jensen (Chris Burback Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were led to green by Brandon Jensen and Jay Richardson. Jensen was the early leader, with Richardson second, and Jesse Bryan and Jake Stai side by side for third. Blake Adams was close behind in fifth. Adams got by Stai the next lap to fourth, with Shadow Kitchner following Adams through to fifth; the duo did the same to Bryan the following go-round, with Adams moving into third and Kitchner taking fourth.

Out front Jensen had more than a 1.5-second lead, which he continued to grow with five laps in the books, and impressively adding a full second to that advantage several laps later. A spun racer with seven to go regrouped the field.

Jensen led the field back to green, as Adams pressured Richardson for second to his outside. Adams took the position at the flagstand, with Richardson’s momentum taking him back into the spot along the bottom coming out of turn two. Kitchner also entered the battle for second down the backstretch, with Adams splitting Richardson and Kitchner three wide for the spot - but the excitement came to an end when a spun car farther back in the field brought the group back under caution.

Back under green Jensen drove away with the lead, as Richardson held second along the bottom lane, with Adams along the high side and Kitchner close behind Richardson along the low lane. Richardson drifted high out of turn two, preventing Adams’ momentum, but allowing Kitchner to move to his inside down the backstretch. Kitchner had second at the line the next time by.

Richardson got too high out of turn two and down the backstretch the following lap, and Adams took advantage and drove by through the middle lane; Derek Haas moved into the picture along the low side. They were three wide into turn three, but the action came to a halt once again for another spin with six to go.

With the green back out, Jensen continued to lead, and Richardson and Kitchner again fought for runner-up honors. Kitchner shook off Richardson and moved in on Jensen down the backstretch; Kitchner pushed the issue as they raced into turn four, tagged the infield tire, drove through the infield and lost ground as Jensen pulled away. Richardson raced back into second in the closing laps as Jensen drove off to the victory. Kitchner regrouped and finished third, while Adams held off 14th-starter Nick Koehler for fifth.

Jake Hartung (Chris Burback Photo)

A.J. Diemel and Blake Adams led the field of WISSOTA Modifieds to the green flag; Diemel was the leader of lap one along the high side, with Jake Hartung right on his heels. Hartung slid him in turn three and came out to lead lap two at the line, and Diemel crossed him back over in turn one to regain the lead. Hartung grabbed the lead back on lap three, but they were side by side and nose to tail over the next several laps. Behind the front-runners Adams held third, Michael Truscott was fourth, and Shane Halopka had moved into the top five.

Hartung had begun to pull away with eight laps in the books, as Diemel had about the same advantage on Adams. Diemel began to cut back into Hartung’s lead two laps later, as Hartung worked to get past a backmarker. Hartung had a relatively easy time driving by the lapper, but Diemel was held up and Hartung’s lead increased once again. Adams remained third, as Truscott and Halopka continued their battle for fourth.

Hartung drove on unbothered through the remaining two laps to garner the victory, with Diemel, Adams, Truscott, and Halopka completing the top five.

Lance Matthees (Chris Burback Photo)

Lance Matthees was the leader of lap one of the WISSOTA Late Model feature, with heavy pressure from Mark Hessler, who was pounding the cushion. James Giossi was third, Jim Carlson was fourth, and Buddy Hanestad and Ashley Anderson fought for fifth; Anderson grabbed the position.

Hessler took the lead down the backstretch during lap three, while Giossi moved in on Matthees in second. Hessler and Matthees were side by side once again with 14 laps to go, and Giossi nearly made it three wide coming out of turn four the next time by. Anderson had moved into fourth, displacing Carlson to fifth.

The lead duo was side by side again to complete lap 11, with Giossi and now Anderson right on their heels.

As the laps began to wind down, Matthees began to close back in on Hessler once more; with Hessler along the top side, Matthees continued to dig down low in the turns, looking for the advantage. With four to go, Matthees was alongside Hessler down the backstretch, but did not have enough to get past. That was not the case the next lap, however, as Matthees moved by Hessler down the backstretch with three to go, and Giossi and Anderson displaced Hessler to fourth shortly after.

Matthees drove a heck of a race out front in the closing two laps as he held off Giossi and grabbed the victory by .163 seconds at the line. Anderson was third, Hessler was fourth, and John Kaanta completed the top five.

In the track’s Hornet class, Brandon Gleiter drove to his second win of the season from his pole starting spot. Jon Parish and Jon Schutts completed the podium.
