The Randt brothers roll past their rivals at the 11th annual Casino Speedway Memorial

By Tony Steuck

WATERTOWN, SD (May 23) - A pair of brothers raced their way to victory lane during the 11th annual Casino Speedway Memorial held on Sunday night. Levi and Landyn Randt each scored a WISSOTA victory, while Chad Becker, Tyler Peterson, and Dylan Tirrel also collected wins at the Watertown speedway over the Memorial Day weekend.

Jake Wranek grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Joel Waba took a quick peak under Wranek, then fell into the grips of Darren Engesser in a battle for second. Waba was crossed up out of turn four, and calamity ensued with Tommy Nichols spun to the infield. Waba was sent to the tail for the restart with three laps complete.

Engesser looked to the inside of Wranek after the restart, and the pair battled door to door while four cars mixed it up for third close behind. Another caution waved with five laps recorded. A rash of cautions kept the field at a slow pace, as well as eliminated Engesser from competition.

Wranek switched to the inside groove after the restart, and Nichols challenged to his outside with Landyn Randt and Scott Hansen close behind. Randt looked to the inside of Nichols and secured second before a yellow flag with 11 laps recorded.

Nichols and Randt raced neck and neck behind Wranek after the restart. Randt built his momentum in the upper groove and snared the lead by a hair to complete lap 16. Wranek did not give in without a fight, but Randt edged away ever so slightly in the closing laps and secured the victory. Wranek was second with Nichols a close third, Waba fourth and Hansen fifth.

Tony Miller fought off Jason Marko to grab the early lead in the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Miller stayed in the bottom groove while Levi Randt moved a lane higher and built speed. Marko slowed to a stop in turns three and four and brought out the caution flag with four laps scored.

Miller continued to set the pace after the restart with Randt not far behind and Zach Flickinger chasing in the low groove. Flickinger closed in on Miller, and the two made a little contact out of turn four which sent Flickinger sideways and he came to a stop on the front chute. The caution waved, and Flickinger was sent to the tail.

Randt charged to the outside of Miller after the restart, and finally nosed ahead to lead lap nine by a slim margin. Miller stayed close on lap 10, but Randt secured the point on the next lap and shifted to the inside line of the speedway. Maria Broksieck worked the trunk lid of Miller for second, while Marko recovered from his early issues with a run to fifth behind Coltyn Schuler.

Randt didn’t open much breathing room over Miller, but held on over the final laps to score the victory. Miller posted a second-place finish ahead of Broksieck, Schuler and Marko.

Mike Stearns and Tony Konold were door to door over the first lap of the WISSOTA Modified feature, but Stearns suffered a flat tire on the second lap and slowed to bring out a caution flag with two of 15 laps scored.

Konold led the pack to the restart, but was quickly under fire from Tyler Peterson. After a battle which lasted a few laps, Peterson nosed ahead to lead lap five and secured the pass with a slide job in turn two. After another caution, Garrett Gross found a lane by Konold for second, and Konold was locked in a battle with Jayson Good and Stearns for third.

Three laps remained when Peterson led the pack to a final restart. Konold tried to regain second from Gross, but the pair made contact in turn four and Konold spun, although Gross was sent to the tail for the restart.

Peterson pulled away after the restart, while Konold, Stearns and Good again battled among themselves for second. Peterson cruised to the victory with Stearns second, Konold third, Good fourth and Gross fifth.

Chad Becker took the lead out of turn two in the 25-lap WISSOTA Late Model main event. He set the pace ahead of Trevor Walsh, while Tyler Peterson worked the high side and battled with Thomas Weisgram as the duo closed on Walsh. Weisgram moved to second on lap six, and Peterson slid under Walsh on the next lap.

Becker edged away from the pack while Peterson stayed close to Weisgram and looked for an opening on the inside, and then the outside. The laps clicked by and Becker stretched his lead, while the battle for second continued with Jayson Good closing on the duo late in the going. Becker earned his first win at the oval this season and Weisgram held off Peterson for second. Good and Mike Stearns rounded out the top five.

Skyler Burgher jumped out to an early lead in the 12-lap WISSOTA Hornet feature while Dylan Tirrel picked off Adam VanDerostyne for second on lap two. Tirrel quickly moved in to challenge Burgher for the lead before a caution flag fell with three laps recorded.

The lead trio flared out three wide a lap after the restart, and Tirrel - the meat in the sandwich - edged away with the lead over VanDerostyne. Bradley Rossow displaced Burgher for third, and the top three spread evenly apart at the head of the pack. Tirrel maintained a slim, but steady lead to the checkers for the victory. VanDerostyne was second ahead of Rossow, Burgher and Joshua Gebhart.

Bodie Croninger led all the way in the Scott’s Gen X Late Model main event. He pulled away and won comfortably for his first victory of the season. Trevor Walsh picked off Jeff Nelson on the final lap for second, and Nelson settled for third. Tony Croninger and John Winge rounded out the top five.
