Peterson, Gave, Koch, Smith, Tourville and Larson lock up Big O wins on Mothers Day weekend

By Tami Jo Kuehn

OGILVIE, MN (May 9) - Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway celebrated Mothers Day weekend Saturday night, as 112 racers checked in to do battle. The night of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racing featured a smooth track, great side-by-side action, and exciting finishes.

At the night’s end, Dexton Koch, Keith Tourville, Brennan Gave, Nikota Larson, Jake Smith and Tyler Peterson went home victorious in sanctioned action.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks kicked off the night’s features with Dexton Koch and Joey Jensen on row one. Koch claimed the early lead, with Jensen close behind. As laps passed by quickly, Koch stretched his lead even as he navigated lapped traffic later in the feature. Koch took the win ahead of Dylan Kromschroeder, Jensen, Shane Sabraski and Ryan Kostreba in the top five.

Keith Tourville (Mark Anderson Photo)

Lucas Boyce and Jeff Ekdahl led the WISSOTA Street Stocks to the stand, but the racers were slowed quicky as the yellow waved. Ekdahl claimed the lead as the race resumed, with Jim Gullikson in second and Levi Randt in third. Keith Tourville made his way into third and challenged Gullikson for second. Gullikson held the point but the racers remained parallel in the turns, lap after lap. With the white flag high in the air, the yellow lights flickered on and the field was slowed.

Back under green, as they rounded the final turn and came down the front chute, Tourville moved high alongside the wall, and at the line, he was at Ekdahl’s door. In a very exciting finish, Tourville took the win ahead of Ekdahl, Gullikson, Dykhoff and Randt in the top five.

Brennan Gave (Mark Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Modifieds were next with Brennan Gave, Zach Benson and Jody Bellefeuille holding the top three spots early on. The track surface was slick and fast as racers cruised around the Big O and spread out. Gave had slower traffic in sight as the race came to a close, but executed perfectly and led the race from flag to flag. He took the win ahead of Bellefeuille, Zach Benson, Bryce Sward and Cole Boston in the top five.

Nikota Larson (Mark Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Hornets were next on the agenda, with William Lange, Christian Kast and Nathan Penny in the top three early on. Penny moved forward to claim the lead while Kast, Lange and Nikota Larson battled three wide for second. Larson advanced forward and took the lead with Penny close by.

Larson remained in control after a caution reset the field, as Brady Fosso moved into second with four laps to go. Nikota Larson led the remaining laps and took the win. After post-race tech, Penny, William Lange, Christian Kast and Adam VanDerostyne rounded out the top five.

Jake Smith (Mark Anderson Photo)

Kris Macko sped away when the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds went green. Memphis Klassen and Nick Montanez battled for second with Joey Jensen just behind. Jensen slipped by the battle into second, and then passed Macko for the lead. As Jensen secured the top spot, Klassen grabbed second and kept close to Jensen, with lapped cars in sight. Jensen used the lapped drivers to gain an advantage, but with few laps to go, the yellow waved. A couple cautions reset the field.

After the restart Smith put pressure on Jensen and nosed ahead for the lead as the white waved. Jensen was back at Smith’s door in the final turn, and as the drivers raced down the straightaway Jake Smith edged out the win. Jensen settled for second with Klassen, Landyn Randt and Nick Montanez in the top five.

Tyler Peterson (Mark Anderson Photo)

The Late Models closed out the night’s program with James Giossi and Tyler Peterson in a battle for the lead. Peterson edged out to the early advantage, but Giossi was not far behind. Giossi dropped low to slide Peterson, but Peterson answered back and held the lead. Drivers began to settle into positions as race cars covered the entire surface. Peterson weaved his way through lapped traffic, while the rest of the front-runners tried to navigate the backmarkers.

With the race coming to a close Dave Mass passed Giossi, but Giossi kept close and Pat Doar moved in. Mass, Doar and Giossi were nearly three-wide as the checkered flags waved. Peterson took the win, with Mass second ahead of Giossi, Doar and Darrell Nelson in the top five.

Next Saturday the Late Models will be off, but the Crown Vics will swing by the Big O. WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hornets will also be on the agenda with racing scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
